some free, linux running, blog edit tools — compare
First of all, what tools do we have for free editing?
- Flock
- Firefox Plugin
- Bleezer (JAVA)
- webpad
- writely
- writeToMyBlog
Writely and writeToMyBlog i have tested before. Just click on them to get recent posts.
I just tried webpad. You’ll need a webserver with Apache, PHP4, cURL, expat, FTP. So it’s not really made for everyone. Nevertheless I tried to install that, but without success. All I have got is an Internal Server Error
Let’s see now what’s about the Firefox plugin. It looks very nice and seems to have all function a blogger need. FTP image upload, URL image includation, Categories an so on. BUT, it is not able to view sourcecode of your entry. It runns always WYSIWYG. Why? Bug? See at your own:
the views don’t looks any different. That’s not comfortable, so i wont try it any longer. (PS: I tried it with firefox2.0 final)
Now, it’s time for Flock. Flock is just easy. Easy to use and easy to setup. How to use Flock, i have blogged before. BUT Flock doesn’t have a FTP Upload for images to your own server. You are just able to use Flickr or Photobucket. Flickr is limited to 21MB upload for free. Photobucket let you have 1024MB for free. For Blogging 1024MB is a lot of space as your blog is not a photoblog
What is about the last but not least Bleezer? Bleezer seems to be a very simple project. Usability is not like other tools. i.E. some buttons are not completely visible. BUT you have an FTP upload, you are able to use several accounts. BUT if you’ll post an entry, it disposes with a java nullpointer exception!
Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.NullPointerException at com.bleezer.Post.jComboBoxBlogActionPerformed(Post.java:1515) at com.bleezer.Post.access$100(Post.java:74) at com.bleezer.Post$2.actionPerformed(Post.java:1171) at javax.swing.JComboBox.fireActionEvent(JComboBox.java:1197) at javax.swing.JComboBox.contentsChanged(JComboBox.java:1268) at javax.swing.JComboBox.intervalRemoved(JComboBox.java:1288) at javax.swing.AbstractListMode
The entry is afer posting inside the blog, but Bleezer dead. Not nice.
Conclusion:
All tools are not the best what you can get for blogging. Some other Windows tools i have tried (i.E. BlogDesk) are much better. Flock, together with Photobucket, is my favorite for Linux use and writeToMyBlog for posting from a guest computer.
